The folks at Netflix warned comedian Jo Koy: Once his 鈥淟ive From Seattle鈥 comedy special aired last spring, his career would take a dramatic turn.
But the Los Angeles-based comic had no idea the turn would come so fast and furious.
A month into 2018, he is seeing his shows sell out in record time 鈥 sometimes a matter of minutes. In most cities 鈥 including Tucson on Saturday, Feb. 3 鈥 he鈥檚 adding shows; in Hawaii last October, he sold out 11 shows at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
鈥淚t was crazy,鈥 Koy, 46, said during a phone call from home in Los Angeles last week. 鈥淲e beat Mariah Carey. She had 22,000 tickets sold, we had 23,500.鈥
鈥淓ver since the Netflix special, this tour has been on steroids. We鈥檙e sold out until May,鈥 he added, sounding like he still couldn鈥檛 believe what was happening to him as he marks 28 years in standup. 鈥淲e鈥檙e doing multiple shows in most cities. It鈥檚 just nuts what鈥檚 going on.鈥

The Netflix moment propelled him from two-show-a-night weekends at small comedy clubs around the country to soldout nights at medium-sized theaters.
鈥淚鈥檝e always had a great little run. There鈥檚 towns I would do multiple shows. They were all comedy clubs, but I was hitting numbers like 13 straight shows at a comedy club,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t felt good, but I always wanted to do that one theater run, and that鈥檚 what this is right now.鈥
Koy plans to follow up with another Netflix special later this year or early next. He鈥檚 already written an hour鈥檚 worth of new material, much of which we get to hear when he plays Fox Tucson Theatre at 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to love the new stuff. This is all new. I鈥檓 going to hit them hard,鈥 he said.
Don鈥檛 expect him to go political or too deep into current events. His comedy is centered on his family, particularly his teenage son:
鈥淢y son got ready for school today and I swear to God his shorts, I don鈥檛 think they鈥檝e ever been cleaned. Ever,鈥 Koy said during last week鈥檚 phone call. 鈥淗e pulled them from underneath the bed and I let him go to school. 鈥榃hatever you want to do, Stinky, do it. I鈥檓 not going to clean your pants for you. If you knew they were dirty, you could have told me a long time ago to wash them. Now go look like you鈥檝e been sliding into second base all day.鈥
鈥淭he fact that he鈥檚 14, it鈥檚 just a world, man. It鈥檚 funny how drastically he changed from 12 to 13. It was like night and day. 鈥業s this the same dude? Who are you?鈥 I鈥檓 living with this stinky man now. I never felt like I should be able to kick a 14-year-old out of the house just because of the way he smells. 鈥楪et out of here, man. Find your own place now, Bro.鈥欌
And his Filipino-American mother:
鈥淪he still thinks it鈥檚 a 鈥榳e鈥 thing, an 鈥榰s,鈥 a 鈥榗omedy duo鈥. I鈥檓 like, 鈥楿h, mom, you know you gotta write these jokes, right?鈥 She鈥檚 like, 鈥榊eah, Joseph, I think I should walk on stage and say hi to everyone.鈥 鈥榃hat? What are you talking about? No鈥.鈥
